I have been working in international development for more than 10 years, and nearly 20 years living and working internationally. My experience is varied: I've worked with large organizations and small ones, started organizations and projects from nothing and jumped in in the middle. What I've learned over the years is that perseverance and dedication is only part of what you need to help change the world. You also need a strategy, to be organized, and you need money.
